BOOK REVIEW: ‘Are These My Basoomas I see Before me?’ by Louise Rennison

It’s the end of an era.

I have spent the last 7 years reading the Angus, Thongs, and Full-Frontal Snogging series, and I finally got around to buying the last book, and finishing it. And what an ending! I am so happy that I took the time to finish the collection- how could I possibly have lived with myself not knowing what happened to wee Georgia Nicholson!?

**DO NOT READ THIS REVIEW UNLESS YOU’VE READ THE OTHER BOOKS OR DONT REALLY CARE OKAY? OKAY.**

***NO SPOILERS but if you haven’t read the other books, you won’t really get the characters etc.

WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT?

In this final instalment, we see Georgia stuck once again, on the rack of luuuuuurve. Yes, she’s got Masimo the gorgeous, Italian lead singer of the Stiff Dylans, but he’s just not.. a laugh? Whereas Dave literally is, Dave the laugh, and we all know Georgia is a mad woman who needs someone who can understand her silliness!

The novel sees the gang getting ready for a final stage production of MacBeth (or MacUseless, as it’s otherwise known), and while Jas is gearing up to play Juliet, and do stage-snogging with Romeo (unfortunately that slimy old Wet Lindsey), the friendship between Georgia and Dave becomes more complicated. He just doesn’t seem happy, and they can’t seem to be near each other without almost snogging… Meanwhile, Masimo is just not happy about the flirtationship between G and D… how’s it all going to work out?!

WHAT I LIKED

  • For me, this book has the ‘right’ ending. I was happy with the conclusion; I just wish I could know what happens to Georgia in the future, beyond this final book!
  • I did think this was one of the funnier books? Normally, writing a conclusion to such an amazing series can be difficult, but Rennison excelled herself (as per usual)

WHAT I DIDN’T LIKE

  • I loved the ending, but I also didn’t love it. I feel like things worked out a little bit too perfectly? Which I know is awesome, but slightly unbelievable perhaps… I would love to know what Ellen’s reaction was, if you get me!

MY RATING FOR THIS BOOK: 4/5

If you haven’t read any of the Angus Thongs books, you just HAVE to. They are well-written, funny, and relatable. What I love is that I’ve read them at two different stages in my life; I initially read these when I was fifteen, the same age as the protagonist, and kept thinking ‘Oh my days, this is SO my life!’ It was funny to grow up with Georgia, only getting into the world of boys and texting and flirting and what have you. But as a 22 year old, reading these books was even more of a gift. I spent nights crinkled up in bed cringing hard thinking ‘WAS I REALLY THIS AWKWARD AND EMBARRASSING GOSH’.

These books are therefore, fabulous for anyone and everyone. I think they’re SUCH good reads, especially if you’ve experienced the perils of teenage girlhood. Plus, the titles are a great talking point…

“Hey Amber! Reading anything good at the moment?”

“Yeah actually, working my way through Knocked out by my nunga nungas“.

SEE?

Anyway, that’s me done. Really glad I finished the series years later- what series were/are you guys obsessed with? Is there any books you’d love to go back and revisit? Let me know, I would love to hear from you 🙂

A Bientot,

Amber xx
